Buying Guide

Five questions that narrow 8 models down to the one you actually need.

1. How far do you actually ride?

Under 10 miles round trip and mostly flat: a scooter usually wins on price and portability. 10–40 miles, or hills, or you're carrying cargo: an eBike's larger battery and payload capacity earns its price.

2. Do you need to carry it indoors or on transit?

If your route includes stairs, a train, or a small apartment, weight matters more than range. Look at models under 35 lb — Glide Lite and Dash S2 are built for exactly this.

3. What's the terrain?

Smooth streets and bike lanes: standard tires are fine. Gravel, potholes, or unpaved sections: fat tires or dual suspension (Ranger X1, Terra, Dash Pro) will save your wrists.

4. Are you hauling anything?

Kids, groceries, or gear over 50 lb regularly: a longtail cargo eBike (Haul Cargo) is purpose-built for it — check the max payload figure, not just top speed.

5. What's your local speed limit?

Check your state's eBike class rules and your city's scooter speed cap before choosing a 28+ mph model — riding above the legal limit for your area can mean fines or the vehicle being impounded.
